About
Where Anatomical precision meets nervous- system-informed-bodywork
Neuro-Somatic Integration Technique ™(N-SIT™) is a massage therapy methodology developed by Mary Bohan Sather, LMT, integrating anatomical expertise, precise therapeutic bodywork, progressive relaxation, sensory awareness and trauma-informed care.
THE PRINCIPLES OF N-SIT™
N-SIT™ is guided by ten core principles that shape how the therapist assesses, communicates, adapts and works with the body. Together, they create an approach that values anatomical precision while recognizing the inseparable relationship between physical tension, sensory experience and the nervous system.
-
Physical and emotional experiences do not occur in isolation. N-SIT™ approaches the person as an interconnected whole.
-
Precise bodywork begins with a strong working knowledge of anatomy, myology and individual anatomical variation.
-
Collaborative relationships with clients and when within scope, other healthcare professionals to create integrated support and teamwork.
-
Clients are listened to, respected and given meaningful choices throughout the therapeutic experience. Clear communication supports trust, consent and autonomy.
-
Safety, consent, predictability and choice are incorporated throughout the therapeutic experience, recognizing that each person may arrive with a different history and relationship to touch
-
The therapist remains fully present and attentive to both verbal and non-verbal cues, tissue response, breathing patterns and changes occurring throughout the session.
-
Sessions progress intentionally from broader relaxation to more specific therapeutic work, allowing the body time to adapt, reducing protective guarding.
-
Breath patterns and appropriate sensory experiences are incorporated to support relaxation, body awareness and readiness for more specific deep tissue work.
-
No two sessions need to look the same. Techniques, pressure, pacing and sensory input are continually adapted to fully support client need.
-
Appropriate education about anatomy, tension patterns and nervous-system responses helps clients better understand their bodies and actively participate in their care.
the N-SIt™ approach
N-SIT™ meets each client where they are. Rather than following a predetermined or choreographed sequence of techniques, each session unfolds in response to the individual client, combining anatomical assessment and precise therapeutic bodywork with intentional pacing, progressive relaxation and awareness of nervous-system responses.
assess
Observation of posture, movement, pain patterns, muscular tension, breathing patterns and the client’s stated goals guides the development of an individualized treatment plan.
Progress
Sessions begin with broader, settling techniques and move toward more specific, deep tissue work as the body becomes receptive rather than defensive or protective.
ADAPT
Pressure, pacing, positioning, technique and sensory input are continously adjusted in real time according to tissue response and verbal and nonverbal feedback,
